Narnii Huuhduud Project

Children of the Peak Goal:

A project designed to help alleviate the suffering and neglect of the most vulnerable and marginalized children in an Ulaanbaatar neighbourhood whose residents make a living and feed and clothe their families with items scavenged from the rubbish dump.

Who do they help/benefit?

Children of the peak or Narnii Huuhduud Project strive to help 150 children that live lives at a disadvantage, they live in a community of about 250 families that are fed, cared and educated around 5 days a week. The children would otherwise be in a ger, not being able to go to school because of family finacial difficulties, and would have little to no food and shelter, with their parents out scavenging rubbish food, therefore unable to care for the children usually around six to ten years old. Since the families are usually herders that lost all their animals in harsh winters, they don't are not legal residents of Ulaanbaatar, making it harder for them to obtain jobs. At the sanctuary, the organization aids the children, gives them adult supervision, medical care, social services, and around 3 nutritious meals per day. The Children of the Peak organization also offer many jobs, with health, wellfair, and nutrition and providing training for adults and such. They are given normal jobs relative to scavenging for metal, food and plastics to resell to get minimal amount of money that is barely enough to support them.

What does it consist of?

A kindergarten built from two, innovative seven-meter diameter fiberglass gers which are joined together with a small cement block building, a 4000 square foot donated modular building, a small on site house that is being refitted and is now the Brad Winters Community Library, a cement play area and a wonderful outdoor playground for the children (We are currently renovating the playground - you can donate here) along with an outdoor toilet, guard house, storage shed and a ger for our Peak Foster Care program.

How do they help?

In their bid to have the Sanctuary help as many people as possible, they have partnered with Mongolian NGOs. Our partnership with our construction NGO resulted in the Sanctuary providing an opportunity for many local, previously homeless alcoholics to gain valuable skills and work experience on their path to rehabilitation and self-sufficiency. Another NGO partner, the Communication Development Center, is headed by a man who was himself a dump child and has worked extensively within the community to help others find a path into mainstream Mongolian society.

They provide all of the operating costs for the Sanctuary and are working to be able to expand our programs to help the children by helping the community at large with the goal of empowering as many families as possible to move forward with a life that does not include scavenging at the dump. Many of our programs are designed to fill the role that would usually be handled by the parents. In their community, alcohol abuse and despair is such that often the parents themselves are unable or unwilling to provide the things their children need beyond the most basic food and clothes. Some of the programs we have in development include:

-   A public hot water shower facility for the local community. Currently, the closest public shower is a 40-minute walk and often our residents have turned away as they are too dirty after working at the dump to be allowed to shower. This facility
will also include flush toilets, a laundry and a barbershop/beauty salon and we expect it to provide employment for
approximately six people from the local community

-   A gymnasium for the children from the kindergarten will also serve as a public meeting place and a host venue for
    community music and dance lessons

-   A local laundry to help the school children have clean clothes and to assist the Sanctuary in maintaining a high standard
    of cleanliness and hygiene.
